Removals From the Common

Location: Section 107

From 1712 to 1824, a portion of Worcester Common was used as the town's principal burying ground. By 1853, the cemetery had fallen into disrepair and the City Council ordered the stones laid flat and covered with earth. Between 1966 and 1968, as the Common was under construction, many of these early burials and their surviving gravestones were reinterred in Hope. Worcester Common is still the City's oldest surviving cemetery.
